Background

Ying-Dar Lin was born in Hsi-Lo, Taiwan, in 1965. He received the Bachelor's degree in Computer Science and Information Engineering from National Taiwan University in 1988, and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in 1990 and 1993, respectively. At UCLA Computer Science Department, he worked as a Research Assistant from 1989 to 1993 and a Teaching Assistant from 1991 to 1992. In the summers of 1987 and 1991, he was a technical staff member in IBM Taiwan and Bell Communications Research (now Telcordia), respectively. He joined the faculty of the Department of Computer Science at National Chiao Tung University (NCTU) in August 1993 and is Professor since 1999. He spent his sabbatical year as a visiting scholar at Cisco, San Jose, in 2007-2008. He was the director of Institute of Network Engineering during 2005-2007. He is also the founder and director of Network Benchmarking Lab (NBL), co-hosted by Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) and NCTU since 2002, which reviews the functionality, performance, conformance, and interoperability of networking products ranging from switch, router, WLAN, to security, and VoIP. In 2002, he co-founded L7 Networks Inc. which addresses the content networking markets with the technologies of deep packet inspection. At NCTU, he currently directs, or co-directs, Computer and Network Center (2007~) , NBL (2002~), Realtek-NCTU Joint Lab (2006~), and D-Link NCTU Joint Lab (2007~).

His research interests include design, analysis, implementation and benchmarking of network protocols and algorithms, quality of services, network security, deep packet inspection, embedded hardware software co-design, WLAN mesh, and P2P networking. From 2008, he is on the editorial board of IEEE Communications Magazine and IEEE Communications Surveys and Tutorials. He was on the program committee of ICCCN'07 and a program co-chair of International Computer Symposium '07. He has been a consultant for several high-tech companies and authored a textbook on Computer Network Experiments. Dr. Lin is a senior member of IEEE. Research Summary (11/2008)

My 15-year research career at NCTU has been divided into four stages so far, including (1) CATV and wireless, (2) Internet QoS, (3) deep packet inspection, and (4) mesh and P2P. Right now I am in the second half of (3) and the first half of (4). In addition to 59 journal papers and 23 filed patents, 134 non-research industry-oriented articles (in Chinese) were written.

For CATV and wireless, there were some well cited works on upstream minislot allocation and scheduling algorithms (ranging, uplink scheduling, n-ary collision detection, HFC MAC, minislot allocation, allocation and scheduling, MPEG scheduling, IEEE 802.14). The architecture that combines cellular and ad hoc networking into multihop cellular (multihop cellular, multihop WLANs) has been cited 341 times with a lot of follow-up works.

For Internet QoS, we developed algorithms for admission control (bandwidth brokers, measurement-based admission control), scheduling (WiMAX bandwidth allocation, request scheduling at access, request scheduling at gateway, multi-resource request scheduling, Co-DRR, DiffServ over network processors, uplink scheduling in GPRS, preemptive DRR), classification (lookup-and-bypass classification), queue management (link load balancing, TCP rate shaping, VoIP Playout, bandwidth management), QoS routing (Qos routing granularity in MPLS, service-sensitive routing in MPLS, Qos routing in MPLS), multicasting (RP relocation in PIM_SM, enhanced DVMRP), and TCP-friendly congestion control (TFCC).

While bandwidth became abundant and security issues arose, I moved my focus to deep packet inspection mainly for Internet security. To speed up deep packet inspection, we profiled many security packages (profiling string matching), changed software architectures (kP2PADM, stream-based AV, content security gateway, integrated security gateway), designed new algorithms for string matching (sub-linear string matching, algorithms for deep packet inspection, early decision), and implemented string or classification matching into network processor(core-centric network processor, memory-intensive network processors, DiffServ over network processors) and FPGA/SoC hardware (sub-linear, root hashing, scalable automation matching hardware, automation matching hardware). In this stage, we built the d→R research model where Linux-based development (embedded Linux, open source) triggered research issues and the proposed solutions were evaluated through experiments on developed systems. The side effects of this research model include a start-up, L7 Networks Inc. since 2002, with 7-in-1 security gateway products and a test lab, Network Benchmarking Lab (NBL) since 2002, examining and benchmarking security, switch/router, WLAN, and VoIP products.

In the second half of deep packet inspection, we now focus on network forensics techniques on beta site with real campus traffic. In the first half of mesh and P2P, we founded Realtek NCTU Joint Lab in 2006 and D-Link NCTU Joint Lab in 2007 with Realtek and D-Link, respectively. The former focuses on WLAN mesh solutions, while the latter addresses Web 2.0 techniques (including NAT, P2P, and OpenID) for D-Link 2.0 products. These two labs run a unique D&r+R&d research model where full-time engineers carry most development duty while graduate students help some development to find their thesis topics.
